Ya'juj and Ma'juj

يأجوج ومأجوج — Gog and Magog
Quran Not yet

Overview

Ya'juj and Ma'juj are two vast nations confined behind a barrier built by Dhul-Qarnayn, as described in Surah Al-Kahf (18:93-99). Near the end of times, after the defeat of the Dajjal, Allah will release them and they will swarm from every elevation, consuming everything in their path. No army will have the power to fight them.

Primary Hadith

حَتَّى إِذَا فُتِحَتْ يَأْجُوجُ وَمَأْجُوجُ وَهُم مِّن كُلِّ حَدَبٍ يَنسِلُونَ
"Allah says in the Quran: 'Until, when Ya'juj and Ma'juj are let loose and they swarm down from every elevation. And the true promise draws near.' (21:96-97) And An-Nawwas ibn Sam'an reported that the Prophet ﷺ said: 'Allah will send Ya'juj and Ma'juj, swiftly swarming from every mound. They will pass the Lake of Tiberias and will drink everything in it. Then the last of them will pass by and will say: There used to be water here once.'"
Sahih Muslim 2937, Quran 21:96-97

Scholarly Context

The Quran mentions Ya'juj and Ma'juj in two surahs — Al-Kahf (18:93-99) describing the barrier, and Al-Anbiya (21:96-97) describing their release as a sign of the Hour. The hadith in Sahih Muslim from An-Nawwas ibn Sam'an provides the most detailed chronological account. Scholars note that their exact identity and location remain from the knowledge of the unseen (ilm al-ghayb), though many classical scholars placed them in Central or East Asia.
