The Trumpet (As-Soor)

Quran Not yet

Overview

The blowing of the Trumpet (As-Soor) by the angel Israfeel marks the absolute end of this world and the beginning of the next. The first blow causes every living being in the heavens and earth to collapse and die, except whom Allah wills. The second blow resurrects all of creation — from the first human to the last — and they will stand before Allah for judgement.

Primary Hadith

"Allah says: 'And the trumpet will be blown, and all who are in the heavens and all who are on the earth will collapse except whom Allah wills. Then it will be blown a second time, and behold — they will be standing, looking on. And the earth will shine with the light of its Lord, and the record will be placed, and the prophets and witnesses will be brought, and it will be judged between them in truth, and they will not be wronged.' (Quran 39:68-69)"
Quran 39:68, Sahih Muslim 2940

Scholarly Context

The Trumpet is mentioned extensively in the Quran: "And the Trumpet will be blown, and all who are in the heavens and earth will collapse, except whom Allah wills. Then it will be blown again, and behold — they will be standing, looking on." (39:68). Some scholars mention a third blow — the blow of terror — based on Surah An-Naml (27:87). The Prophet ﷺ said: "How can I be comfortable when the one with the Horn has already put it to his lips and inclined his forehead, listening and waiting to be commanded to blow?"
